One-third to one-half of dogs in San Diego region shelters are pit bulls or pit bull mixes, according to county officials. Their owners often fail to reclaim them and potential owners are hesitant to adopt them.
The county Department of Animal Services and Even Chance, a San Diego-based pit bull advocacy, resource and rescue organization, will host their second "Alter Pit'' event in an effort to reduce the number of unwanted pit bulls and pit bull mixes. The event is planned for 8 a.m. to noon Sunday, at the animal services facility at 5821 Sweetwater Road, county officials said.
Officials said they were aiming to spay or neuter 25 dogs during the event, and to alter perceptions about the breed. Even Chance personnel will also provide information about responsible pet ownership, officials said.
