An estimated 1,800 homeless and low-income San Diegans are expected at the Salvation Army's 31st annual free Christmas meal at the downtown Civic Center complex on Christmas Day.
About 400 volunteers are scheduled to help out with the event at Golden Hall.
Attendees will be served a total of 790 pounds of turkey, 495 pounds of stuffing, 2,000 half-pints of milk and 270 pumpkin pies. They'll also be treated to a performance by the Salvation Army's brass band.
The organization has been serving holiday meals in San Diego since 1887. Benefactor Joan Kroc had the event moved to Golden Hall in 1983 so more people could be fed.
The Salvation Army also serves a big holiday meal on Thanksgiving.
