The San Diego County Registrar of Voters says 4,016 people under the age of 23 signed up to vote in the county in March. That includes 378 who pre-registered, meaning they aren’t yet old enough to vote.
The registrar could not provide comparative data, but statewide numbers help to illustrate the impact the demonstrations have had. Between September 2016 and March 2018, nearly 90,000 youth had pre-registered to vote in the state. That’s an average of about 5,000 a month. But last month alone, 11,000 pre-registered.
Voter registration has been a major push of the school walkouts and marches following the February school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
