Bloody Disgusting, AMC Theaters, and The Collective are partnering to bring foreign horror films to mainstream theaters. The first film playing here in San Diego under the "Bloody Disgusting Selects" Banner will be "Rammbock: Berlin Undead" (playing at AMC Mission Valley tonight at 10pm and Saturday at midnight) from Germany.
As a fan of horror it is often frustrating to read about horror films from abroad but never see them hit our shores on the big screen. Pop entertainment films have a much harder time getting distribution because they aren't really what distributors are looking to send out to art houses yet their subtitling can make it a hard sell in terms of getting mall theaters to open up screens. These kinds of films straddle genre and art house conventions by being pop entertainment in a foreign language.
So up steps Bloody Disgusting with "Bloody Disgusting Selects." The plan is to bring foreign and U.S. independent films to mainstream theaters once a month. So far the titles discussed are "Rammbock" (see trailer below); "Cold Fish" from Japan's Sion Sono ("Love Exposure" and "Suicide Club"); and from the U.S., "YellowBrickRoad."
According to the Bloody Disgusting website: "AMC will show a new title in the series each month, at least twice a week, across 32 key markets, including a special Friday midnight show, beginning in May. After their theatrical exhibition at AMC, films from the series will be available to fans of the genre in DVD, Video on Demand (VOD), online and television. Released though The Collective’s home-video partnership with Vivendi Universal, DVDs for titles in the Bloody Disgusting series will feature unrated content, bonus features and special packaging for each title."
So I hope horror fans will come out and support this films series. "Rammbock" was unavailable for preview but I'm willing to take my chances when it comes to zombie apocalypses.
