San Diego Opera Artistic Director At March 24 Rehearsal

Ian Campbell's Last On Camera Interview

Ian Campbell's appearance at the premiere of San Diego Opera's "Don Quixote" on Saturday drew boos and heckling. On March 24, he gave what has turned out to be his last on-camera interview.

When Campbell arrived backstage at the Civic Theatre last month, just days after announcing that San Diego Opera would close, he looked visibly tired. As the opera's general director and artistic director, he had been dealing with a flurry of media requests for interviews to discuss the closure and mentioned he was also dealing with a flood of emails from individuals.

At the time we sat down for an interview, which was meant to be more about the production of "Don Quixote" than the closure of the opera company, neither one of us knew that it would be the last time, at least for the moment, that Campbell would be appearing on camera to discuss the San Diego Opera.

Here's his interview, where he discusses his decision as well as his involvement directing a 2009 production of "Don Quixote." Campbell also recently directed "Murder in the Cathedral" for San Diego Opera.
