The San Diego Opera announced Friday three shows have been added to its 2014-2015 season, made possible by the $4.5 million in donations that poured in after its board of directors voted to close due to financial difficulties.
The opera's 50th season was put in jeopardy in March, when the company announced its intention to cease operations as it faced what was then believed to be insurmountable fiscal woes. However, a web-based crowdfunding campaign brought in more than $2.1 million, which combined with other donations and a $1 million gift from board President Carol Lazier, kept the company afloat.
The company has now added a Sept. 5 performance by Richard Tucker Award-winners Ailyn Perez and Stephen Costello to promote their album "Love Duets," followed by "We'll Meet Again: The Songs of Kate Smith" on Dec. 11 and "El Pasado Nunca se Terminar," which is set for April 25.
The shows will join the previously announced "La Boheme," which will begin Jan. 24, "Don Giovanni," which will run from Feb. 14-22, and "Nixon in China" in March. Gala concerts will close the series of performances in April 2015.
Company officials said around $3.5 million in ticket sales and other proceeds would be required next season to make ends meet.
Three opera subscription ticket packages start at $105, and a full season ticket is $215 and can be purchased at sdopera.com or by calling (619) 533-7000.
