La Jolla Music Society's SummerFest celebrates its 30th anniversary this summer, and single tickets for the month-long event are now on sale.
The chamber music festival brings nationally-recognized musicians from all around the world to perform intimate concerts from Aug. 3 to 26, 2016.
Here's a look at some highlights:
Opening Night: A Bohemian Rhapsody: Friday, Aug. 5
Featuring music by Janáček, Smetana and Dvořák.
Music Transfigured: Saturday, Aug. 6
Schoenberg's String Sextet "Transfigured Night," will be performed by Martin Beaver and Cho-Liang Lin, violins; Che-Yen Chen and Heiichiro Ohyama, violas; and Carter Brey and Eileen Moon, cellos.
An Evening with Zukerman Trio: Tuesday, Aug. 9
Violinist Pinchas Zukerman and his renowned chamber ensemble perform Brahms, Mendelssohn and others.
Premieres & Reprises: Sunday, Aug. 14
A program of new works, as well as performances of past pieces commissioned by SummerFest.
An Evening with Paquito D'Rivera: Wednesday, Aug. 17
The Grammy-winning Latin jazz clarinetist will perform both classical and jazz compositions with bassist Pablo Aslan and pianist Alex Brown.
Bach Cello Suites with Mischa Maisky Parts 1 and 2: Friday, Aug. 19 and Saturday, Aug. 20
The San Diego debut of cellist Mischa Maisky, who will play all six of J.S. Bach's Suites for Unaccompanied Cello over two consecutive evenings.
An Evening with Marc-André Hamelin: Wednesday, Aug. 24
The internationally-acclaimed pianist performs his world premiere piece for cello and piano, as well as music by Tchaikovsky and Liszt.
Finale with James Conlon & Gil Shaham: Friday, Aug. 26
SummerFest closes the festival with Schubert’s elegant Symphony No. 5, Prokofiev’s dramatic Violin Concerto No. 2. and Mozart’s Symphony No. 34 in C Major.
