Moonlight State Beach in Encinitas may soon become a little more artsy.
Local nonprofit Surfing Madonna Oceans Project on Monday submitted a proposal to install a glass mosaic artwork on a 15-foot-by-8-foot wall at the Marine Safety Center at the beach.
The artwork will depict ocean life in Encinitas, according to a statement from the city. The Surfing Madonna Oceans Project is asking city officials to approve the group's offer to fund, oversee the creation of and maintain the piece.
“The use of art such as this is a profound way of educating the community on the fragility and beauty of our local ecosystems while adding value to Moonlight Beach and the community,” said Bob Nichols, the nonprofit’s founder.
The group proposed the project's construction to begin in October for a completion date next Memorial Day.
Residents can comment and see a rendering of the project at the Encinitas Library and City Hall through Sept. 24. The Encinitas City Council will consider the proposal on Sept. 28.
