Here's an all-encompassing recommendation for all things Bread and Salt this Saturday. A new collection of public architecture process works and concepts, "Trace," opens at Not An Exit Gallery (which is a small room tucked away within Bread and Salt), featuring projects by Rob Quigley, Jennifer Luce, Ojay Pagano, Ted Smith and Rudy Argote, plus new work by Bread and Salt's founder James Brown. At Quint ONE, there's a closing reception for Roman de Salvo's "Electric Picnic Redux" installation.
At Best Practice, another closing reception from 5 to 8 p.m. for Mauricio Muñoz and Andrew Roberts (exciting news: Roberts was just selected for the 2022 Whitney Biennial).
And in the main gallery space, Irma Sofia Poeter opens her new solo exhibition, "New Man: A Woman's Gaze," with a reception on Saturday from 5-8 p.m.. You can learn more about the show and check out my interview with Poeter here.

'The Wiz,' A Theater Performance for Black History Month
Theater
Diva Works Entertainment and the WorldBeat Cultural Center have joined forces for a youth stage adaptation of the 1978 film, "The Wiz," which starred Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Lena Horne, Mabel King, Richard Pryor — to name just a few major players in 1970s Black American cinema. The film was a retelling of the classic "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" book and movie. This production is directed by Ms. Monie at the WorldBeat Cultural Center, who also runs their summer camp program.
Details: Saturday, Feb. 12, 2022 at 7 p.m. WorldBeat Center, 2100 Park Blvd., Balboa Park. $15.
More visual art: "Female Rising" is a new show of works by artist Deena Altman, on view Saturday, Feb. 12 through Mar. 11, 2022 with an opening reception from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's a series of paintings that mark a period in a woman's life, focusing on the setbacks and experiences women face at eight specific age ranges, from the toddler years into old age. Art on 30th Gallery, 4434 30th St., North Park. Free.
San Diego Symphony: Music Connects
Music, Classical
Free show alert! This series from the San Diego Symphony brings a one-hour, family-friendly concert to local neighborhoods, for free. This weekend's series involves three shows on Saturday, conducted by the Lyric Opera of Chicago's Stefano Sarzani.
The program includes Beethoven's "Overture to Coriolan, Op. 62" which is mighty and dare-I-say quintessentially classical. It was written for Heinrich Joseph von Collin's 1804 play "Coriolan," about the Roman leader Gaius Marcius Coriolanus. Shakespeare also wrote a play about him, though modern audiences may recognize the name from the character Coriolanus Snow (aka the future president) in "The Hunger Games" prequel "Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes."
The Symphony will also perform Louise Farrenc's "Symphony No. 3 in G minor." Farrenc was the only woman to ever teach at the Paris Conservatory in the 19th century, and made a splash as a virtuoso pianist as well as composer and educator.
Note: the performances are indoors, and the San Diego Symphony requires all guests to show proof of vaccination, even for children under 12. The program is intended for ages 5 and up. Advance registration is required. RSVP or find future programs here.
Details: Saturday, Feb. 12, 2022 at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at Foothills United Methodist Church in Casa de Oro, 4031 Avocado Blvd., La Mesa; and at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of San Diego, 321 Date St., downtown. Free.
Schizophonics / Wild Wild Wets / The Inflorescence
Music, Rock
Looking to be thoroughly inspired by the creative youth of San Diego? Don't miss The Inflorescence, a young band opening at The Casbah on Saturday evening. The Inflorescence just released a new single, "Are You Sorry."
Plus, locals Wild Wild Wets and Schizophonics will round out the night.

SDMA+ Romantic ArtStops with the San Diego Shakespeare Society
Visual art, Theater, Literature
The San Diego Museum of Art will present their next SDMA+ program with an outdoor-only option, though some of the performance will take place indoors. They're pairing up with the San Diego Shakespeare Society for love-themed performances inspired by art in the museum's collection. For the indoor component, museum admission is required, but it will be your chance to catch an interpretation of the famous "Romeo and Juliet" balcony scene performed using the museum's rotunda.
SDMA+ performances are usually pretty bite-sized. For this, expect two separate performances, each with two components: the first beginning at 1 p.m. indoors with an outdoor, free segment beginning at 1:25 p.m. in front of the museum. The second performance will begin indoors at 2:30 p.m. with the outdoor part beginning at 2:55 p.m. No reservations are necessary.
Details: Sunday, Feb. 13, 2022 at 1 p.m. indoors, 1:25 p.m. outdoors and 2:30 p.m indoors, 2:55 p.m. outdoors. San Diego Museum of Art, 1450 El Prado, Balboa Park. $0-$20.
