A $20.2 million federal economic stimulus grant will help fund construction of an interchange between State Route 905 and Interstate 805 in the South Bay, the San Diego Association of Governments announced today.
The interchange will connect the freeway to the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, which currently relies on a six-lane surface street to accommodate the flow of people and goods between the United States and Mexico, according to SANDAG.
"This project will improve safety and mobility and it will also accomplish the goals of the stimulus -- putting people to work right away, as well as boosting our economy by improving the flow of people and goods between the United States and our biggest trading partner, Mexico," said Lori Holt Pfeiler, mayor of Escondido and chair of SANDAG's board.
The Recovery Act grant was among 51 awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation for roads, bridges, rail and port projects around the country.
