The replacement of the Anthony’s Seafood Grotto on the San Diego waterfront could be delayed.
The California Coastal Commission last week sent a letter to the San Diego Unified Port District imposing an appeal period which runs through Feb. 21, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Officials fear the Coastal Commission’s appeal could delay the $13 million project by the Brigantine Restaurants.
The Port District voted for a replacement restaurant in the prime location as part of an effort to remake the Embarcadero.
Anthony's has leased the space since 1965, but the venerable restaurant closed its doors Jan. 31.
Anthony’s will be demolished to make way for a new platform and two-story restaurant complex, which will include four restaurants: Brigantine, Miguel's Cocina, Ketch Grill & Taps and Portside Gelato & Coffee.
The Port on Wednesday released a statement:
It is not unusual for public agencies, in the course of our duties, to have disagreements. In those cases, the Port works toward amicable resolutions.
The Coastal Commission could take up the issue at its March or May meeting.
