A new documentary focusing on the experience of migrants in Tijuana will premiere Friday in San Diego. “Stuck in Tijuana” was directed by filmmaker Charlie Minn. Many of these migrants from Central America say they are looking for a chance to seek asylum in the United States. This is happening as President Donald Trump calls for billions of dollars to build a new border wall.
Minn traveled to Tijuana. He said he set out to put a human face to the so-called “caravan” of asylum seekers. He visited several Tijuana shelters where he estimates he saw hundreds of unaccompanied minors. He described a shelter where 1,000 migrants had to share one bathroom. He said the migrants are enduring a brutal human rights crisis.
Back in San Diego, Minn has been speaking about his film at local colleges. He describes college-age students as the “generation of now.” He said thanks to social media, they have the power to change the current situation, which Minn believes will go down as a dark time in American history.
“Stuck in Tijuana” will premieres Friday, March 22 at the Theater Box in downtown San Diego. Click here for show times.
