The Pew Hispanic Center found that 60 percent of undocumented Latinos have no health insurance.
The survey showed that adult Hispanics, who are neither citizens nor permanent residents, are twice as likely as documented Latinos to have no health insurance. They are three times more likely to go without insurance than Americans as a whole. The survey also showed that four in ten undocumented people use community clinics when they need treatment.
Another 15 percent say they use private doctors, hospital emergency rooms or HMOs. Gretchen Livingston, who conducted the research, says the study was done to better inform a nationwide debate.
"There's just been so much debate swirling around undocumented people and health care, with all the discussion about health care reform, that we wanted to add some more data to the mix," said Livingston.
Researchers contacted about 4,000 Hispanic adults by telephone to conduct the survey.
