The Saturday after Thanksgiving is designated Small Business Saturday, rounding out the shopping bonanza of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Many San Diego-based businesses are hoping that shoppers will sidestep the big box stores and visit locally owned — and sourced — shops instead.

Small Business Saturday was started by American Express in 2010 as a way to encourage local shopping. Many neighborhood business districts across San Diego County will participate in the shopping day.

Advocates for the 'buy local' movement say more money stays in the region when goods are purchased at local stores. According to The 3/50 Project, for every $100 spent in locally owned, independent stores, $68 returns to the community in taxes, payroll and other expenditures. But only $43 spent in a national chain stays local.
