Veterans enrolled at San Diego State University have a new Veterans’ Center to serve the expanding student veteran population on campus.
More than 1,000 veterans or family members of veterans are enrolled at San Diego State University.
At the ribbon cutting ceremony for the expanded Center, Erika Korb, President of the Student Veterans’ Organization, said it’s an important gathering place.
“I feel like there’s a place on campus for veterans,” she said, “So we’ve taken another step to make sure that student veterans feel important on campus, and in the community, and they feel supported.”
The Center includes meeting rooms, a Conference Center and a Lounge.
The cost of the remodeling was covered by private donations.
Congressman Bob Filner, chair of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, said having a place to gather and belong is especially important for people coming out of the military.
“They feel lost,” Filner said, “and as soon as they lose that sense, you know, the military has that sense of camaraderie, that someone is watching your back, they need to get that here, and this Center is going to provide that.”
Filner said more than 300,000 students are now enrolled at universities and colleges around the country under the new GI Bill.
San Diego State University was recognized by the magazine "Military Times Edge" as one of the best universities for veterans in the country.
