The sun sets on the Carrier Classic

The Carrier Classic went off without a hitch on Veterans Day, with the University of North Carolina Tar Heels besting the Michigan State Spartans on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson. It was the first time a college basketball game was played on a live aircraft carrier.

And, apparently, it won't be the last. The Associated Press reported recently that UConn has been selected to play in the second Carrier Classic, which will take place on Veterans Day 2012 in San Diego. No word yet about which aircraft carrier will host the game.

What's even more exciting (at least for me) is what the Hartford Courant is reporting - that the University of Connecticut's women's basketball team has been approached about playing in the Carrier Classic 2013:

USA Today reports Mike Whalen of Morale Entertainment Foundation, who helped organize the 2011 Carrier Classic, said the 2012 event could include a woman's game between Ohio State and Notre Dame.

Gotta be honest, I'd love to see women's college athletics get showcased in such a high profile event. How about you?
