President Barack Obama announced today the U.S. Marine Corps will expand its presence in Australia beginning mid-2012. It will be the first time Marines conduct exercises on their own in Australia. Obama made the announcement with Prime Minister Julia Gillard in Australia's capital of Canberra.
According to the Department of Defense:
The agreement between the two countries also gives the U.S. Air Force more access to Royal Australian Air Force facilities.
