The Camp Pendleton Varsity Boxing Team was disbanded this week—in part because of a recent injury that left a boxer in the Intensive Care Unit of a Los Angeles County hospital, Head Coach Staff Sgt. Kenneth Jones wrote on the Team's Facebook page.
Jones gave several other reasons for the disbandment, including:
"...risk of the sport, difficulty in finding a qualified level 3 coach, and budget cutbacks."
According to Camp Pendleton Patch, an unnamed boxer on the Camp Pendleton Varsity Boxing Team suffered a serious blow to the head during a June 30th match in Pomona. He was airlifted to a hospital in L.A. County were he spent time in the Intensive Care Unit before being released.
The staff of Marine Corps Sports Headquarters ordered the disbandment of the Camp Pendleton team. Boxers who still want to participate in the sport can try out for the All Marine Boxing Team, according to Staff Sgt. Jones.
