The Navy has released the names of the two crew members who died when their MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter crashed in the Red Sea. Killed were Lt. Cmdr. Landon L. Jones, 35, of Lompoc, California and Chief Warrant Officer Jonathon S. Gibson, 32, of Aurora, Oregon.
Both sailors were assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Six at Naval Air Station North Island.
On his Facebook page, Gibson writes that he earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Oklahoma, and joined the Navy in 1999. He leaves behind a wife and two young children.
Jones grew up in Lompoc, a town about 50 miles north of Santa Barbara. He graduated the U.S. Naval Academy, according to the Navy Times.
As Home Post previously reported, the Navy called off the search for the two missing crew members on Monday.
Eyewitnesses told CNN that the Knighthawk landed on the deck of the USS Lawrence, and three passengers aboard got off of the helicopter...
...The two crew members were still aboard when, apparently, a wave hit the ship severe enough to cause the helicopter to fall into the sea.
An investigation into the crash is underway, but hostile activity isn't suspected as the cause of the accident.
