It's fun to let loose every once and a while, and what better time to have a little fun than Mardi Gras? For active-duty troops, veterans, and reservists who need a designated driver after enjoying Fat Tuesday, Operation Homefront and Uber are teaming up to give them a free ride home. Or at least a deeply discounted one.
Jack Chirrick, Executive Director of Operation Homefront California, said in a news release:
“The great folks at Uber are doing this to ensure that those who defend our freedom can enjoy a night out at Mardi Gras without worrying about drinking and driving."
So, what exactly is Uber? According to Wired.com, it's a Silicon Valley startup...
"...that lets anyone summon an executive car with two presses on a smartphone touchscreen."
If you're a service member or veteran in San Diego, San Francisco, or Sacramento, you can get a free ride worth $30 from Uber by doing one of two things:
- Signing up at http://www.uber.com/GO/SAFEMARDIGRAS, or
- Downloading the mobile app on your smartphone, and entering in the promo code SAFEMARDIGRAS.
Once you meet your Uber driver, you must show your military ID to get the free ride.
Christopher Ballard, General Manager of Uber San Diego, said his company wants to make sure service members have a fun, but safe, Mardi Gras:
“With the Uber app ready to go on their phones, military personnel can enjoy the parade and live entertainment without having to worry about a ride home. With the tap of a button, a car will arrive curbside within minutes, ready to take service members wherever they need to go."
