SOUTH CHINA SEA (Oct. 22, 2014) The amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu (LHA 5) transits the South China Sea.

The U.S. Navy will hold a special decommissioning ceremony for the USS Peleliu on the morning of March 31, at Naval Base San Diego's Pier #7.

The Peleliu is the last ship of its kind (a Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship) and has been in service for almost 35 years.

During that service, the Peleliu embarked on 17 deployments, and covered more than one million miles.

According to the Navy, the Peleliu played a major role in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks:

Peleliu was the first ship in the Global War on Terror to deploy Marines to the beach in support of operations in Afghanistan.

After the Navy decommissions the USS Peleliu, the ship will be towed from San Diego to Pearl Harbor to become part of the Navy's reserve fleet.
