Is California Too Big to Fail?
Maureen Cavanaugh: The polls were right - most Californians who voted in yesterday's special statewide election wanted nothing to do with almost all the propositions presented to them by the governor and state lawmakers. This, despite warnings of financial catastrophe for the state if the propositions failed.
But even before Tuesday's vote, Governor Schwarzenegger announced the budget shortfall had increased, and whether or not the propositions passed, legislators would still have to find up to $20 billion in new revenue or cuts to keep California afloat.
