Mayor Kevin Faulconer is planning his San Diego-wide State of the City address for early next year, but other elected officials are updating their constituents on a more hyperlocal scale. Four of the city’s nine council members are hosting similar events at the district level.
District 9 Councilwoman Georgette Gomez will give an update on Thursday for the communities of Kensington-Talmadge, the College Area, City Heights and Southeast San Diego.
Spokesman Roberto Torres said the councilwoman will reflect on her accomplishments of 2017, her first year in office, and those of the district's constituents.
"We'll also be acknowledging 12 different district residents who have volunteered a lot of their time working to uplift their communities that they live in or work in," Torres said.
Three other council members are planning an annual address in 2018.
District 1 Councilwoman Barbara Bry, who represents La Jolla, University City, Torrey Pines and Carmel Valley, set her State of the District address for Jan. 25. On that same day, District 2 Councilwoman Lorie Zapf will host her event to update San Diego's beach communities, Point Loma, Bay Ho and Bay Park.
In March, District 6 Councilman Chris Cate will hold his second State of the District address. His region includes Clairemont, Mira Mesa, Kearny Mesa and Sorrento Valley.
District 8 Councilman David Alvarez’s office said it isn’t planning a single event to update its constituents, but is arranging similar sessions throughout 2018 to mark his final year in office. He represents San Ysidro, Otay Mesa and parts of downtown San Diego, including Barrio Logan.
Council President Myrtle Cole, who represents the fourth district, District 3 Councilman Chris Ward, District 5 Councilman Mark Kersey and District 7 Councilman Scott Sherman also are not planning a State of the District address. However, Kersey's office pointed to a previous town hall event in July, and a spokesman for Sherman referenced past community coffee events.
Faulconer's State of the City is set for Jan. 11 at the Balboa Theatre.
