Prosecuting Hate Crimes
Reports of hate crimes in San Diego are on the rise and a data analysis by The San Diego Union-Tribune shows they’re difficult to prosecute. The data from the San Diego District Attorney’s offices shows the number of hate crime prosecutions in 2019 is on track to exceed last year’s total. One of those cases is the shooting attack at the Chabad of Poway synagogue on April 27.

Rep. Duncan Hunter defends Navy SEAL accused of war crimes

Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter is defending a Navy SEAL accused of war crimes. The charges against Edward Gallagher include murder, attempted murder and posing for photos with the corpse of an enemy fighter. Gallagher pleaded not guilty. Hunter and his wife face a September trial for allegedly misusing $250,000 in campaign funds. In a Zero Blog Thirty podcast episode released Tuesday, Hunter spoke about his role as a Marine artillery officer in Fallujah, Iraq and he said he fired hundreds of rounds, probably killing civilians, including women and children.

Development in fire-prone areas

It’s no secret San Diego County faces fire risks year-round. Some of the most devastating wildfires in the last 20 years have occurred in our own backyard. Now eight new proposed housing developments are sparking debate because they would be built in fire-prone areas.

Governor Gavin Newsom is currently pushing the state to increase volunteer emergency response teams for natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods and wildfires. San Diego hosted the national Community Emergency Response Team conference (CERT), which started Wednesday.

SANDAG leadership

The San Diego Association of Governments, or SANDAG, has a new leader with a new vision. Executive Director Hasan Ikhrata started in late 2018 after the former director resigned. Ikhrata is focusing on revitalizing San Diego’s transportation plans alongside the state’s climate goals. However, some of his proposals are causing turbulence within SANDAG’s board.

Mark Sauer

He has covered a wide range of events: Wild fires in Southern California and Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast; Super Bowls and the World Series; foster care and child-abuse issues; the Roman Catholic Diocese's sexual-abuse scandal and bankruptcy; royal visits of Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles and Princess Diana; Republican and Democratic national conventions; high-profile criminal trials; and many other stories, from the silly to the sublime. Along the way, he interviewed everyone from presidents to pan-handlers. His work exposing the false accusations and prosecutions of several San Diegans for murder, rape and child abuse garnered Pulitzer Prize nominations and many regional and local journalism awards, including Best in the West, the Sol Price Award for Responsible Journalism and several San Diego and California bar-association awards. Mark has a degree in journalism from Michigan State University.
