San Diegans who lost their homes in the wildfires can get a lot of help rebuilding. KPBS reporter Andrew Phelps has more about a series of free workshops that starts today.
The county has waived fees for new building permits. But it can take years to even begin rebuilding. Free workshops will help people wade through zoning laws, septic rules and building codes. The classes are meant to educate citizens before they call contractors and architects.
Residents should bring title reports, assessor maps and other records. The workshops run through mid-January, in Escondido, Ramona, Fallbrook, and several other burned communities.
The county will also help residents clear away debris before rebuilding. The $30 million program offers the service free to residents of the unincorporated areas.
