Power Grid Company Suggests Ideas for More Renewable Power Sources

The company that operates California's power grid has suggestions on how renewable power sources can be added to the statewide system. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has details.

The California Independent System Operator Corporation has released its final report of how renewable resources can be integrated into the electrical power grid. The report shows how large amounts of wind and solar power can be blended into the energy mix that makes up the grid system.

Among its many recommendations, the CAL ISO report finds that pairing demand reduction programs with renewable power helps offset the variability of the wind and sun. That is expected to help maintain reliability of the grid - or the lack of blackouts, brownouts or shortages - when the new, green electricity generation comes on line in the next few years.

Power companies in the state, including San Diego Gas and Electric, are required to have a certain percentage of the power come from renewable sources by 2010.
