If you’re looking to include charities on your holiday gift list, beware of scammers this season. That’s the word from the state Attorney General’s office. Spokesperson Teresa Schilling says they get complaints all year long, but the problem increases this time of year, and once you’ve given, it’s tough to get the money back.

Schilling: Honestly what often happens is by the time we find out about it and we go check them out, poof they’re gone, and so that’s why we really encourage consumers to be wary and to make sure that they’re making smart choices because that’s the best way to keep those guys from being successful.”

She says beware of names that sound like legitimate charities, but have been altered slightly – and avoid giving on the spot or giving cash. She says you can use the charity search on the Attorney General’s website to find out if a group is legitimate.
