Preuss Ranked No. 8 In Nation

UC San Diego's Preuss Charter School has made the Top 10 list of America's Best High Schools for 2009.

That's based on U.S. News and World Report second annual survey of high schools across the country.

This year Preuss moved up two spots to earn the No. 8 ranking.

Paul Gazzerro is the lead analyst of the annual survey. He says 97 percent of Preuss students are taking college-level course work -- also known as Advanced Placement course work.

He says the problem is not enough students are passing the AP tests with flying colors.

Gazzerro: They're getting a lot of kids to Advance Placement, which is wonderful. They're kids are doing well. But (Pruess) can do better. I'm sure if you went in there (the school) and you talk to educators, they'd want even more success than we've measured at this point.

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria Virginia earned the No. 1 ranking  for the second year in a row.

The report gave a "Gold Medal distinction" to 100 schools in its survey. Seventeen of those schools are in California.

The magazine hits newsstands today.
