It's not unusual to hear San Diego charities organizing food drives and feeding the needy during the holidays. But a fundraiser held this week was one-of-a-kind. F3G, short for Fish. Food. Feed Good, organized a special overnight fishing expedition.
F3G is a local non-profit that takes unwanted fish and donates it to the needy via the San Diego Food Bank, Meals on Wheel, San Diego Rescue Mission and Father Joe's Villages.
The leaders of those organizations, including President and CEO of Meals on Wheels, Debbie Case attended the trip.
Case said they caught 160 fish and all will go to feed the hungry.
"So they get fresh fish, albacore, blue fin, yellow fin tuna, so nutritionally its very good for anyone receiving the fish through our charity," said Case.
Case and other executives paid $550 out of their own pocket to go on the trip. The proceeds will go to support F3G and founder Todd Bluechel.
Since 2010, he has been donating thousands of pounds of fresh fish to local charities for distribution. He wants to raise awareness among local fishermen, that they can donate unwanted catch to his charity.
"San Diego has a large fleet of boats, there's at least one boat that goes out everyday, so there's the opportunity to collect fish everyday, " said Bluechel.
Bluechel wants to take his non-profit to other coastal cities across the country.
