San Diego's Top Weekend Events: Billie, Bob and Mary GUEST:Nina Garin, editor/producer, KPBS/Arts Calendar

This is KPBS midday edition I'm Jade Hindmon and alternative holiday concert a classic movie sequel and an exhibition of a never before seen work from a well-known San Diego artist. That's all coming up on our weekend preview PBS arts calendar editor Nina Garin is here with the details. Hi Nina. Hello. OK we're starting out with Rex the halls. What is that. But it's a holiday concert put on by the radio station ninety one acts. And it's like a survey of alternative music from the last 20 years. There are 6 bands and they play short sets. I know these concerts can sometimes feel kind of soulless like the bands that play their hits and. But this is actually a good lineup. And this station has a tradition of putting on good concerts. So who are some of the bands playing Death Cab for Cutie is the headliner. That's a band from the 2000s that has these really earnest and heartfelt lyrics. I've seen them probably more than any band I ever saw because I covered music back then they were the band of the era and their music was on TV feels like the O.C. Gossip Girl Even the Twilight soundtrack. So let's get nostalgic we're taking it way back to 2000 with Death Cab for Cuties company calls definitely says early 2000s. You also wanted to mention an up and coming musician performing at Rex the halls. Her name is Billy Eilish and she's a 16 year old performer. She blends like electronica with a dark edge. Think like Lorde or Lana Del Rey. Personally she reminds me of PJ Harvey. And if you know me at all that is like the ultimate seal of approval. But she also has her own thing going on. She recently did a show in San Diego and it was completely sold out. So this is a good opportunity to year before she's like the huge artist that she's going to be before she blows up all right. You bought a clip of Billy Eilish this is you should see me in a crown. You see me at about just about as I like it. That's right. Everybody should see me and be silent when you watch me make moves. All right. You mentioned six bands. Who else will people see other bands performing will be third eye blind. Lord hear on the interceptors and Barnes Courtney wrecks the halls happens tonight at Pachanga arena San Diego which is the new name for the sports arena. We go from a 16 year old singer to an 89 year old artist Bob Metheny is getting an exhibition at the San Diego history center tell us who he is. He's a longtime San Diego artist. But really he's kind of just known within artist circles and that's why the exhibition is called almost anonymous. Bob has worked with many mediums from typography to sculpture and now he's doing these really small paintings that are colorful and they're inspired by three letter words. And I also understand he had a major influence over at Southwestern College. Now he was the school's first full time art teacher and he actually taught my mom when she was there. She took lots of his classes and we have art from that time in my house. He also founded the school's art gallery and he's responsible for the permanent collection they have of modern work. And this is the first time his work has ever been shown like this right. Correct. There's never actually been a retrospective of his work and much of what's on display has never been seen before. And the San Diego history center almost never exhibits living artists. So this is special and Bob will be at the opening event. Bob Masini almost anonymous opens Saturday at the San Diego history center and will be up through March 24th. Finally we're going to end with some magic in every job that must be done. There is an element of fun. You find the fun jobs game and every task you take is a piece of cake. To see. Zach sugar helps go down go down. Miss Mary Poppins returns opens next week. But you just can't wait to talk about it can't you. No I can't wait. It's very powerful. I've been waiting for this for a long time. It's not a remake I should say it's a sequel and it stars Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins and also Lin Manuel Miranda. He's Jack who I guess is also a chimney sweep. And also in it is Meryl Streep Colin Firth Angela Lansbury and Dick Van Dyke. I'm excited about this with you. Yeah this is a sequel. What is it about. So it's a sequel that took 54 years to make. It's one of the longest gaps between film sequels. This one follows siblings Jane and Michael Banks. Now they are adults and they need help with their own children. And Mary Poppins comes back. So will this be just as magical as the 1964 version. How can it not be. There's animation we have come so far with animation and has Lin Manuel Miranda who can do no wrong and it is getting decent reviews. Good deal. Mary Poppins returns. Opens Wednesday at local theaters. I've been speaking with PBS arts calendar editor Nina gaire and Nina thanks thanks. Have a good weekend.

This weekend, a longtime San Diego artist gets a museum retrospective, 91X presents its holiday concert and we look forward to the return of Mary Poppins!
