UPDATE: 11:11 p.m. Nov. 12, 2019:
All power was restored to customers Tuesday night after a bird struck a substation in City Heights causing an outage that hit most of Mid-City and the College area, according to San Diego Gas & Electric.
The bird struck in the substation at 54th Street and Chollas Parkway around noon, which initially caused the power to go out for 24,000 customers, SDG&E spokesman Wes Jones told KPBS.
Power was restored to 16,000 customers around 2:40 p.m. and all power was restored shortly after 10 p.m., according to SDG&E.
The original restoration time was estimated at 4 p.m. but the timeline was pushed back because of the extensive damage to the equipment, Jones said.
Nine San Diego Unified schools and one charter school were affected by the outage, including Hardy Elementary School near San Diego State, district spokeswoman Jamie Reis told KPBS. There were no early dismissals, she said.
Carver and Hardy Elementary schools’ power was restored around 1:30 p.m., Crawford High and Mann Middle and Iftin Academy’s power was restored around 2:30 p.m. Clay, Euclid, Fay, Ibarra Elementary, and Language Academy remained without power throughout the school day, Reis said.
Meanwhile, SDSU canceled all classes. Some students took to social media to thank SDG&E for the power outage because it got them the day off.
