Let’s say you show up too early to see a band at the Casbah. Well, just walk across the street and check out this month’s exhibition at Subtext Gallery. Beau Basse, of LeBasse Projects in LA, chose twenty-five artists from the whippersnapper demographic and gave them a chance to get the whole gallery experience before they march too far out of art school and into the terrifying world of reality. The result is the exhibition The Kids are Alright.
The "kids" get first-hand knowledge of creating art on a deadline and dealing with galleries, while we get the far easier job of gawking at the impressive results, like the flowing blue lines that form the endless locks of hair on Yuta Onada’s Winter angel in Soon It Will Be Cold Enough. Jared Schorr is likely still recovering from X-acto knife hand cramps, but the goofy smiles that break across the faces of those admiring It’s Gonna Be a Good Day should help the pain subside. And don’t miss the writhing, scaly Cthulhu-esque presence staring at you from the dark corners of Asia Eng’s painting of a fawn.
