Doug Liman had the right combination of elements when he brought "The Bourne Identity" to the screen back in 2002. Based on Robert Ludlum's book, the film offered a tense, action-packed spy thriller. But Liman's been on a downward spiral with films like "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" and "Jumpers."
But Plame's story, adapted from a book by her husband Joseph Wilson, might be just what Liman needs to set him back on the right course. The story has solid potential. In case you don't remember, Plame's status as a CIA agent was revealed by White House officials after her husband wrote a New York Times op-ed piece claiming that the Bush administration had manipulated intelligence reports about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq to justify its invasion of the country. It was alleged that the officials did this as a means of retaliation against Wilson. You got all the elements of a good tense drama and all set within a real context.
Naomi Watts plays Plame and Sean Penn plays Wilson. The two had previously starred together in "21 Grams." The trailer looks promising. So have a look and see what you think.
