A high wind watch will take effect for the valleys and mountains of San Diego County later Monday as strong, gusty northeast winds develop in the region, meteorologists said.
The watch will take effect late Monday night and continue through Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
"Surface high pressure will strengthen over the Great Basin bringing periods of strong, gusty northeast winds ... along the coastal slopes of the San Diego County mountains,'' the agency said.
A first round of strong winds is expected sometime before sunrise Tuesday and will continue into Tuesday afternoon, the NWS said, noting gusts up to 70 miles per hour were possible during that time.
The agency anticipated a second round of even strong winds — up to 80 mph — before sunrise Wednesday.
Sustained winds during the high wind watch are expected to be around 25-35 mph on Tuesday and 30-45 mph on Wednesday.
A high wind watch is issued when there is the potential for a hazardous wind event capable of causing damage.
"The winds will make driving difficult, especially for motorists with high profile vehicles,'' the NWS said. "Watch for broken tree limbs and other debris. Secure loose outdoor objects such as lawn or patio furniture.''
