Staff Sgt. Paul Worley has earned the Silver Star for heroic actions during a Taliban ambush in Afghanistan in June of 2010. Worley is a member of 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines based at Camp Pendleton.
The awards ceremony is taking place on base today, according to the Marine Corps Times.
The MC Times reports Worley was part of a security team on June 12, 2010 when the Taliban ambushed the Marines with sniper fire, grenades, and rockets:
Worley is credited with directing suppressive fire on Taliban positions, a move that enabled the squad to set up inside some compounds, the citation reads. When his machine gunners ran low on ammunition, he braved intense enemy fire to resupply them.
A few days before that fateful June day, CBS News followed the 3/1 and Staff Sgt. Worley for a report on Marines in Afghanistan. Click here to watch the video.
