It may soon cost more money to use public transit in San Diego. Fare increases are being considered for two regional transit providers. KPBS reporter Katie Orr has details.
The San Diego Association of Governments is considering approving fare increases for the Metropolitan Transit System and the North County Transit District. SANDAG has already held one public hearing on the matter but only one person spoke. Senior Planner Dan Levy says there isn’t a lot of organized opposition to the increases.
“I think there’s been a lot of publicity about the predicament of the transit agencies, their loss of funding from the state and declining sales tax revenue. So I think people understand this is necessary,” he says.
If approved, the cost of regional, senior, disabled and youth passes would all increase for both transit systems. The changes would go into effect July 1st. SANDAG will hold another public hearing on fare increase Friday morning.
