Two Texas congressional candidates will debate each other Tuesday night in Spanish. The debate is hosted by the Spanish news network Univision and will be televised on local Texas stations this Saturday.
Incumbent Quico Canseco, a Republican businessman originally from Laredo, Texas is seeking a second term. His challenger is Democrat Pete Gallegos, is an attorney and former state representative.
Both seek to represent the 23rd Congressional District of Texas, one of the largest in the nation. The district
stretches across two-thirds of the state's border with Mexico, from the outskirts of El Paso down to San Antonio. More than half of eligible voters are Latino and 50 percent of the population speaks Spanish.
In the last decade the district has swung back and forth between Republican and Democratic representatives. Polls indicate this year's race to be especially close.
Tuesday night's debate will be recorded in San Antonio. Fronteras reporter Hernan Rozemberg will be one of the panelists.
