A Mexican businessman at the center of a federal campaign finance investigation was released from jail in San Diego Monday after posting $5 million worth of real estate as bail.
A grand jury indicted Jose Susumo Azano Matsura last week on a single count of illegally contributing to a 2012 mayoral campaign as a foreign national. Federal law prohibits foreign nationals from donating money in U.S. elections.
Azano is accused of using a straw donor to give $120,000 to a political action committee supporting "Candidate 3." News outlets including KPBS have identified the candidate as former San Diego Mayor Bob Filner.
Azano is one of four men accused in the federal campaign finance probe.
Former police detective Ernesto Encinas, San Diego lobbyist Marco Polo Cortes and campaign consultant Ravneet Singh are accused of conspiring to help Azano funnel more than $500,000 to San Diego municipal and federal elections.
All four have pleaded not guilty.
