The latest federal campaign finance reports show one of Rep. Darrell Issa’s, R-Vista, challengers has raised more in individual contributions this year than has the incumbent.
Orange County attorney Mike Levin, one of three Democratic challengers for Issa’s seat, has raised over $605,000 in individual contributions this year. His campaign consultant, Parke Skelton, said these contributions came from all over the country, and are an indication that Issa's seat is, "on the radar of a lot of people who want to take Congress back."
Issa, who narrowly kept his seat in the House last November, has raised just over $400,000 in individual contributions in the same six-month time period.
Democrat Doug Applegate has raised just under $400,000 in individual contributions. He raised and spent more than $2 million before losing to Issa last November.
Issa reports $468,000 in campaign operating expenses so far this year, while both Levin and Applegate have spent less than $200,000 on running their campaigns.
Issa has the most cash on hand for next year’s race: $671,000 — partly due to more than $200,000 in committee fundraising.
Paul Kerr, the most recent Democrat to enter the race, has not yet declared any financial contributions.
