A new poll out this week shows the recall might not be such an easy climb for California Governor Gavin Newsom. UC Berkeley's Institute of Governmental Studies found, among those who are most likely to participate, a slim majority want Newsom to stay in office. Even so, there is no clear front-runner in the field of Republican candidates, with talk radio host Larry Elder edging out John Cox and former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer.
Far-Right Groups In East County
Recall candidate Larry Elder was in El Cajon last weekend, where dueling groups of protesters engaged in some violent confrontations. It’s the latest in a string of incidents over the past year involving small, locally organized far-right groups who feel emboldened to take public action. In this latest case, there are questions whether a group known as Exiled Patriots communicated with local police and event organizers in advance.

Here Come The Masks Again
From the White House to local colleges, we’re seeing a flurry of moves that might make the wearing of protective face coverings more commonplace as communities try to deal with the surging COVID-19 delta variant, which was first detected in India. Even those who are fully vaccinated are being asked to mask up in indoor settings. New CDC data show even vaccinated people can become infected and transmit the virus to others. Despite that, the surge in new infections and hospitalizations is largely affecting those who have not received a COVID-19 vaccine.
