People across San Diego County today will commemorate 9/11, the day Al Qaeda terrorists, some with ties to San Diego, hijacked four airliners and killed nearly 3,000 people.
Events are scheduled around San Diego to mark the somber day:
Ceremonies on the flight deck of the USS Midway aircraft carrier are scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. The tribute will include a tolling of the bells, a twin helicopter flyover, Harbor police fireboat display, and a 21-gun salute along with additional tributes.
Remembrance interfaith prayer service will take place at Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice, University of San Diego, 5998 Alcala Park, San Diego. 10 a.m. to noon. sandiego.edu.
San Diego chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community (AMC) is holding its third annual Muslims for Life Blood Drive. San Diego State University, Aztec Walk.
Senator Joel Anderson's office will be holding its third annual memorial ceremony in honor of those who lost their lives 12 years ago in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Cuyamaca College, 900 Rancho San Diego Parkway, El Cajon. 10:30 a.m.
National City Firefighters Local 2744 will honor first responders who lost their lives on 9/11. National City Fire Station Headquarters, 343 E. 16th St., National City. 8:30 a.m. (760) 715-6385.
A noon ceremony will honor the victims of 9/11, along with displays of steel from the World Trade Center, part of the Flight 93 fuselage and limestone from the Pentagon and a fire department survivor, Hilton San Diego Bayfront, One Park Blvd.
