Former Camp Pendleton Marine and accused serial killer Itzcoatl "Izzy" Ocampo now faces the death penalty if he is found guilty of the six counts of murder with which he's charged.

Prosecutors say Ocampo is responsible for the stabbing deaths of four homeless men in Orange County in a "serial thrill-kill spree," as well as the murders of the mother and brother of one of his friends, according to The Associated Press.

A grand jury transcript released in March says Ocampo told investigators he planned to kill 16 people to follow in the footsteps of University of Texas tower killer and fellow former Marine Charles Whitman.

Ocampo is an Iraq War veteran who was deployed in 2008 with the Marines' 1st Medical Battalion based at Camp Pendleton. While there, he was responsible for bagging the bodies of fallen Marines, according to the Orange County Register.
