There won't be a shortage of candidates vying to fill the congressional seat left vacant by Duke Cunningham. A number of prominent Republicans have already declared their interest, and more could enter the race. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.

Former North County Assemblyman Howard Kaloogian and current State Senator Bill Morrow are running for Cunningham's congressional seat.

Former Congressman Brian Bilbray has also expressed interest, and Escondido Mayor Lori Pfeiler is said to be considering it.

So far, the lone Democratic candidate is Cardiff School Board Member Francine Busby. She says even though the district is heavily Republican, she's not discouraged.

Busby: "There are many elected officials who are Democrats, and most of them are women, who have been elected in this district. So I feel very strongly that Democrats do have a very good chance here."

A special election to fill Duke Cunnigham's congressional seat will be scheduled sometime next year.
