Unified School District Expects About 140 Layoffs in June

The San Diego Unified School District is expected to layoff close to 140 school workers this year. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

District officials say 134 workers may be out of a job in June. They say the cuts are needed to make ends meet. The district is facing a leaner budget this and next year because student enrollment continues to drop. Districts get state funding based on their enrollment levels. Most of the affected workers assist in offices, classrooms and libraries.

School board member Sheila Jackson says any cut hurts. She doesn't agree on all the proposed cuts because many school employees have kids in the district.

Jackson : We teach the children of the working people. So those peoples' jobs have to be protected for the good of the district, and the good of the students. Because when we see students who are living in poverty, some of those students come from our workers.

A little more than 60 employees will also see their work hours reduced. The San Diego school board is expected to vote on the proposed cuts on Tuesday.
