There are tons of Comic-Con parties all weekend long. You can find lists of them here and here. If you don't have a pass to the sold-out pop culture convention, the parties are a good way to buy a drink for your favorite klingon.
MUSIC
Elton John's playing this Saturday at Cricket Wireless Amphitheater. Don’t miss out on a chance to see one of the greatest singer/songwriter/performers of our time and try your hand at the lyrics to “Benny and the Jets.” (“She’s got electric…?”)
For those of us who can recall our MySpace days, we remember Rolling Stone listed Miniature Tigers as one of the “25 best bands on MySpace.” Today, the Tigers are no longer an internet-only sensation and are playing the San Diego House of Blues on Sunday.
Please your ears this Sunday with an encore performance of Luscious Noise at Anthology. Conductor/producer John Stubbs and members of the San Diego Symphony will perform the “greatest hits” of the previous four Luscious productions, providing a great chance to catch up as a new-comer and revel if you're an old hat.
What could be more relaxing after a long workday than “A Hard Day’s Night”? Come check out Richard Lester’s classic Beatles film this Thursday at 8pm at the Museum of Photographic Arts.
Local San Diego band Pinback is making their annual cameo at the Del Mar Racetrack as part of the "4 O' Clock Friday" Summer concert series. The series is one of our favorite San Diego summer traditions, so be sure not to miss it.
ART
San Diego continues to celebrate street art, this time focusing on Golden State standouts. A show of California's most notable street artists opens this week at Alexander Salazar Fine Art. Golden state greats Chor Boogie, Saratoga Sake, Crol, MEAR ONE, and local standout Mike Maxwell will be on view.
Another street art show - lots of local representation - opens this weekend at the Edgeware Gallery in Kensington. If you want to see what's happening on our streets, this is the show for you.
Browse and buy the work of 40+ local artists this Saturday at Mixture’s All Day Art event. Artists will work live in the showroom on everything from paintings to pottery will be a minimum of 25% off.
The next “Poetry & Art for $300 Slam” is this Wednesday and it’s hosted by San Diego’s own Eber Lambert (for you American Idol fans, Adam Lambert's dad!). So support art and the artists at The Museum of the Living Artists.
Just in time for the Comic-Con craze, animation legend Bill Plympton will be at the Chuck Jones Gallery. The artist himself will be making an appearance at Friday’s reception since he's in town for Comic-Con.
THEATER
Are you a fan of "The Soup?" What about the hit NBC show "Community?" If you answered yes to both of these questions, you'll be happy to hear that Joel McHale will be at Humphrey’s Concerts by the Bay this Friday night.
FILM
Dig the soft rock of the 70s and 80s? Own a sailor hat and scarf? Well, come check out DJ Claire's Yacht Rock party at the Whistle Stop on Saturday night. Music, costumes, and Hollywood Steve will be in the house to screen his "Yacht Rock" mockumentary series about the lives and careers of the most famous soft rockers, such as Steely Dan, Michael McDonald, and Christopher Cross.
