June 6 will be a historic election day for Mexican citizens to go to the polls. Thousands of offices are at stake in Mexico’s upcoming election. Almost half of the country will elect new governors.
This is the first time local and federal elections are being combined, making it the largest election in Mexican history. But, will Mexican citizens head out to the polls and exercise their right to vote?
Rafael Fernandez De Castro, the director of US-Mexican Studies at UC San Diego, said in the last gubernatorial election only 29% of Baja Californians voted. Mexican citizens living outside of Mexico are also eligible to vote through mail and electronically, if they registered on time.
KPBS wants to know, if you are a Mexican citizen, will you be voting in the June 6th elections? If you have family in Mexico, will they be voting? Why or why not? Do you feel that the Mexican elections impact San Diego? If so, how?
