Three of the leading mayoral candidates will answer environmentally focused questions Monday night during a forum hosted by the Sierra Club, which has not yet made an endorsement in the race, while a fourth candidate will submit his answers in writing.
Topics set to be addressed by former City Attorney Mike Aguirre, City Councilman David Alvarez, ex-Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher and, in writing, City Councilman Kevin Faulconer, during the 7 p.m. event at the Balboa Park Club include the seals in La Jolla.
There also will be a specific question on each candidate's position regarding amending the local Coastal Plan to close the Children's Pool during pupping season, something for which the City Council called three years ago.
The panel of Sierra Club volunteers plan to touch on an open space issue; garner each candidate's interest in looking into the creation a public energy company to compete with San Diego Gas & Electric, but will deliver more clean energy; and will judge each candidate on his commitment to expanding bicycling opportunities in the city, according to the Sierra Club.
About 100 club members are expected to attend, officials said.
