Warmer weather is expected across San Diego County Friday and through the weekend, and beachgoers were advised to be cautious in the water, where large wave and rip currents were expected.
A National Weather Service beach hazards statement is set to remain in effect until Sunday evening. Waves and surf of 4 to 7 feet are expected off the coast of south and southwest facing beaches amid sunny skies and temperatures that will push to a few degrees above average by Saturday.
Forecasters attributed the rising mercury to a building high-pressure system. High temperatures over the weekend are expected to be in the mid-60s to low 70s near the coast, in the mid- to high 70s in the valleys, in the low 60s to mid-70s in the mountains and up to 90 degrees in the deserts.
Authorities warned beachgoers that the high risk of rip currents could result in dangerous swimming conditions today and through the weekend. Usually swimmers can escape a rip current by swimming parallel to the coast before heading in, but those who cannot make it to shore were advised to tread water or float while calling or waving for help.
Even warmer conditions could be possible early next week as the ridge grows stronger and offshore winds increase, according to the weather service.
