This long weekend is all about skewing your expectations, whether it’s a new take on Jane Austen, or listening to the music of "Game of Thrones" translated through the organ. Plus, the San Diego Jewish Arts Festival begins, and local high school students try their shot at Broadway.
"Pride and Prejudice"

Yes, you can expect period costumes and romantic language in Cygnet Theatre's "Pride and Prejudice," but you should be prepared for cheer routines and Cyndi Lauper music, too.
Written by Kate Hamill, the new adaptation is original and hilarious. And at the same time, it examines social and gender issues through a modern perspective.
At the heart is still the romance between Elizabeth and Darcy — and the struggle to get all five Bennet sisters married off. But in this version, actors play more than one character, so you’ll see a bearded Charlotte Lucas and a Mr. Bingley who doubles as the forever-ignored Mary Bennet.

Does the next Broadway star come from San Diego? Find out as the top theater students showcase their talents at the Broadway/San Diego Awards.
This annual competition brings together high school musical theater actors from around the county, performing songs from musicals like "The Addams Family," "Freaky Friday," "Oklahoma" and more.
Be in the audience as the students are scored live. The top two performers earn a trip to New York, where they will compete in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (known as The Jimmy Awards), a contest that has led many finalists to Broadway careers.

The San Diego Jewish Arts Festival

The 26th annual San Diego Jewish Arts Festival is a celebration of Jewish arts told through dance, theater and music.
It begins this weekend with Song of Songs, a collaboration between San Diego Ballet and renowned Klezmer musician Yale Strom. They will debut three new works inspired by romantic poetry.
Other festival highlights include nights devoted to Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen music; a new original play by Herbert Seguenza; a bues summit and much more.
