Hawaiian Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa announced in a press release today that all six Marines killed Thursday in a CH-53D helicopter crash were based out of Hawaii. Hanabusa said in a statement:
Coincidentally, a Vietnam War-era CH-53D was also involved in a fatal crash in Hawaii's Kaneohe Bay on March 29, 2011. That crash killed one Marine and injured two others. The Associated Press reports mechanical failure was the cause of that crash.
Defense Department officials say Thursday's crash in Afghanistan does not appear to be caused by enemy fire.
